Minerals are vital inorganic nutrients, which can not be produced by the organism. Although in relatively small amounts but however, they are absolutely necessary and must be in taken with food. They are so essential for virtually all body processes such as construction processes, metabolic functions , growth and even interaction of muscles and nerves. The demand is highly dependent on age, gender, activity, health status and life situation.

Minerals in the body are divided in two dimension: Elements having a higher concentration than 50 mg per kg body weight, are called as essential quantity or macro elements (calcium, chloride, potassium, magnesium, sodium, phosphorus ). Elements with less than 50 mg per kg of body weight are called trace or microelements (chromium, fluoride, iodine, cobalt, copper , manganese, molybdenum, nickel , selenium, zinc) . An exception is iron, although it is one of the trace elements, it lies with about 60 mg per kg body weight over the definition.
